Aleksandra
After almost two decades, the monumental Aleksei typeface meets its feminine counterpart, Aleksandra.
Over the course of nearly 20 years, Aleksei was adapted for magazines and books. These one-off adaptations offered valuable insights and inspired me to explore new directions. Back in 2008, while I was dabbling in bookish text typefaces, inspiration came from the daily news: riots surrounding the Aleksei monument in my home country of Estonia sparked a wave of ideas. Geometric, robust, simplified hammer serifs and rotating teardrops emerged from this, paired with a humanistic type structure.
Some things need time to settle. As a result, we created a more sober and static type system comprising three distinct subfamilies. Tall Aleksandra and her aliases bring elegance to upscale headlines and serve a variety of contexts, while a simplified yet sturdy caption subfamily is designed for small point sizes and situations where serif typefaces struggle to survive.
Aleksandra is the fruit of hours, perhaps years, of rethinking, honing and maturing the very first Estonian text serif typeface.
